STUDENT INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the Integrated Environmental Health Middle School Project (IEHMSP) website! We hope you'll find it to be an interesting and useful resource as you learn about environmental health issues. Environmental health is the study of how the environment around us affects human health. Toxicology is the study of environmental health hazards and is based upon four concepts, which are pictured in the icons you see below: Dose/Response, Routes of Exposure, Individual Susceptibility, Risk/Benefits and Toxicity.

Another concept you'll be hearing about is Environmental Justice which means that everyone has a right to a healthy environment. Unfortunately, some communities have more exposure to environmental pollution than others. You'll learn more about risk factors and exposure for low income communities and communities of color.

If you want to collect information about an environmental health issue you can learn more by using Community Resources such as the EH resources section of this website. You can then take Action on the information you gather such as writing a letter to the editor of your newspaper or speaking to your city council. Everyone can have a positive impact and affect change within their own communities.

Begin by reading the Student Introduction to Environmental Health which you can download by clicking the link below.

You may also want to visit the Quicksilver Question Web Module. This fun, interactive module will introduce you to the connections between historic gold mining, mercury contamination, fish consumption and human health.
